Ignition problems are stressful because they leave you stranded. They’re also often misdiagnosed — many “ignition” problems turn out to be key problems, fob problems, or a dead battery. We start every ignition call with a phone diagnosis so you don’t pay for the wrong fix.

A useful diagnostic to try before you call: insert the key and gently jiggle it side-to-side while applying turning pressure. If it suddenly turns, your cylinder is worn but not seized — a rekey or clean will buy you another year. If nothing changes no matter what, the cylinder is fully worn and needs replacement. Don’t force it past the resistance; that’s how keys snap.

Common situations we handle

  • Ignition key won't turn or feels sticky.
  • Key turns but the car won't start (and you've ruled out the battery).
  • Key is stuck inside the ignition and won't come out.
  • Key broke off inside the ignition cylinder.
  • Ignition cylinder is loose in the steering column.
  • After replacing the battery, the car won't recognize the chip.

How the service works

  1. Call us with the vehicle's year, make, model, and a description of the symptom.
  2. We confirm whether it's an ignition issue, a key issue, or a transponder issue — they overlap but the fix differs.
  3. We quote based on the most likely cause and tell you the worst-case price up front.
  4. Mobile service: we come to where the car is parked.
  5. We diagnose on-site, repair or replace the cylinder, cut a new key if needed, and test.

Stuck key vs broken ignition

A 'stuck key' problem is sometimes the key, sometimes the cylinder. If the key has been working fine and suddenly stuck, the cylinder is suspect. If the key is bent, badly worn, or a recently made copy, the key is suspect. We figure out which one on-site without committing you to the more expensive fix.

When the cylinder needs replacement

Cylinders wear out. After years of insertion/removal, the pins inside don't reset to the right heights and the cylinder starts to misbehave — sticky on turn-in, hard to remove the key, or eventually impossible to turn. A new cylinder typically comes with a new key, and we rekey it to match other keys on the vehicle (e.g. the door lock cylinders) if you want one key for all.

Don't force the key

Forcing a stuck or hard-to-turn key is the fastest way to make a small problem into a big one. The most expensive ignition jobs almost always start with someone forcing the key and snapping it off. Call us before forcing it.

Why call Prime Dallas Locksmith

Ignition issues skew toward older vehicles in the Dallas mix — vehicles 10–20 years old where the ignition has seen thousands of uses. We see plenty in East Dallas, Lake Highlands, Garland, and Mesquite. Newer vehicles with push-to-start don't have a traditional ignition cylinder to break, but they have their own failure modes (proximity issues, dead fob batteries) that we also diagnose.

What it costs

Pricing depends on the lock, the situation, the time of day, and how far we drive. We confirm the price on the phone before we send a technician.

  • Simple stuck-key extractions are usually the cheapest ignition job.
  • Worn-out cylinder replacement is mid-range.
  • Some vehicles require new keys cut and programmed when the cylinder is replaced — adds to the price.
  • Older vehicles are often cheaper than newer ones.

Frequently asked questions

How long does ignition repair take?

Stuck-key extraction is often 15–30 minutes. Full cylinder replacement on most vehicles is 60–120 minutes.

Can you make a new key if you replace the cylinder?

Yes. For transponder vehicles we also program the new key to the car's computer.

Will the new key still work the door locks too?

Usually yes — we rekey the new ignition cylinder to match the door lock cylinders so one key works everywhere.

Can you handle ignitions on push-to-start vehicles?

Push-to-start vehicles don't have a traditional cylinder, but they do have ignition modules and start-stop electronics. Most issues on these are actually fob or proximity issues — see our key fob programming page.

Is this cheaper than the dealer?

Typically yes for most vehicles, and we come to you. For some very new vehicles the dealer is the right call — we'll tell you honestly.

My key turned in the ignition this morning but won't now. What changed?

Several possible causes — dust/dirt accumulation, a slightly worn key pushing the pins to a marginal position, or cylinder wear that just hit the threshold. We diagnose on-site.
