Most key duplication is a five-minute job. The trick is knowing when it’s that fast — and when it actually requires programming, an authorization letter, or different hardware entirely.

A duplicate is only as good as the original it was cut from. A key worn down by ten years of use will produce a copy that’s slightly off from the original spec. If your existing key has rounded teeth or shines too brightly, a fresh code cut (where we cut a new key directly from the lock’s internal pinning) is more reliable than copying the worn version.

Common situations we handle

  • You moved into a new home and only have one set of keys — want spares.
  • Multiple people share a house or business and need their own keys.
  • Bought a used car and only have one working key.
  • Office where employees come and go and you need extra keys on hand.
  • Lost one of two keys — want a backup before you lose the second.
  • Smart-lock override key in the drawer needs duplicates as a backup.

How the service works

  1. Tell us what type of key — basic mechanical, transponder/chipped, smart-lock override, or commercial restricted.
  2. We confirm whether we can cut and (if needed) program that key.
  3. Bring your existing key to our office, or schedule a mobile visit if you can't easily come in.
  4. We cut the new key, test it on the lock if possible, and (if applicable) program the chip.
  5. You leave with working spares.

What we can and can't duplicate

We can copy almost any standard mechanical house key, most business keys, and the vast majority of car keys made in the last 20 years. We will not duplicate restricted 'do not duplicate' commercial keys without authorization from the registered owner — that's how restricted keys keep their security. Some very new car keys with proprietary cryptography can only be duplicated at the dealer.

Why transponder keys are more expensive than they look

A car key with a chip in it (most modern cars) is actually two parts: the cut metal blade that turns the lock, and the chip that talks to your car's computer. Cutting the metal is fast and cheap. Programming the chip to be recognized by the car is the harder part — it requires equipment for your specific vehicle's security protocol.

Smart locks and backup keys

Even smart locks usually have a mechanical override key — the one that opens the lock when the batteries die or the app stops working. We can duplicate these. Many homeowners forget this key exists until the batteries fail at the worst time.

What it costs

Pricing depends on the lock, the situation, the time of day, and how far we drive. We confirm the price on the phone before we send a technician.

  • Standard mechanical key copies are inexpensive.
  • Transponder/chipped car keys cost more because of the chip and programming.
  • Restricted commercial keys (e.g. Medeco, Mul-T-Lock) require authorization from the lock owner.
  • Smart-lock override keys are typically priced like a standard mechanical copy.

Frequently asked questions

Can you duplicate any key?

Most keys, yes. Restricted commercial keys require authorization. Very new car keys sometimes require the dealer. We'll be honest on the phone if your key is a job we can do.

Does the duplicate work as well as the original?

Yes — we use the right blank and the cut is machine-precise. Sometimes a fresh copy turns better than a worn original.

Do I have to come to your office?

Mechanical key cuts are easiest at our Forest Ln office. For car keys requiring programming, we can also do the work mobile at your location.

How many spares should I have?

For a house: at least two working sets, one stored somewhere safe. For a car: at least two working keys — replacing the only key after losing it costs much more than getting a spare ahead of time.

Can you duplicate a key that doesn't have a printed code?

Yes — we cut from the physical key, not the printed code. We don't need the original code to make a working copy.

What about old skeleton keys for antique furniture?

Sometimes. Antique skeleton-key locks are case-by-case — older Dallas homes have plenty of them. Call us and we'll tell you whether your specific key is one we can copy.
