Mailbox lock work is one of the smaller, more affordable jobs we do — but it’s surprisingly common, particularly in apartment buildings and cluster-mailbox developments across Dallas.

If your apartment manages a USPS-owned CBU cluster and a lock has actually failed (not just lost-key): the official path is to file a missing-key report at the local USPS branch office. We can then replace the lock with an approved USPS-spec replacement and hand the new keys back to you, but the paperwork has to start with the post office, not us.

Common situations we handle

  • Lost your apartment cluster mailbox key.
  • Bought a home where the mailbox lock is missing or the key is gone.
  • Mailbox lock is stuck and the postal carrier can't deliver.
  • After identity-theft concerns, want to replace the mailbox lock with a higher-security one.
  • Property manager replacing locks for a tenant change.
  • Cluster mailbox lock is broken or showing signs of tampering.

How the service works

  1. Tell us whether it's a standalone mailbox or a USPS cluster box (CBU).
  2. If it's a cluster box on USPS property, the postal service may need to be involved — we'll tell you.
  3. We quote a price for the lock and the labor.
  4. For private mailboxes (your own house, your own apartment building) we install the new lock and provide keys.
  5. For USPS cluster mailboxes we coordinate with the postal carrier where required.

USPS cluster mailboxes vs private mailboxes

If your mailbox is part of a USPS-owned cluster box (CBU), the postal service is the legal owner of the lock — even though you have a key to your individual compartment. Some CBU locks can be replaced by us; others must be replaced by USPS. We'll tell you on the phone which category yours falls into.

When the right move is just a new key

If the lock is fine but the key is lost, sometimes a new key can be cut from the lock code (engraved on the lock). This is faster and cheaper than replacing the whole lock. We check this option first.

Why mailbox security matters more than people think

Mailbox theft is rising in Dallas, especially around tax-document season and check-mailing periods. Many original mailbox locks are extremely basic — easy to pick or bump. Upgrading to a higher-quality lock is a small project with a real security benefit.

Why call Prime Dallas Locksmith

Mailbox lock calls come from across Dallas but especially from the older apartment communities around Forest Ln, Lake Highlands, and East Dallas where cluster mailboxes are common. We also do plenty of standalone mailbox work in the older single-family neighborhoods of Lake Highlands and Garland.

  • Local team based in North Dallas off Forest Ln.
  • Open 24 hours — including weekends and holidays.
  • Mobile service for homes, businesses, and vehicles across the Dallas area.
  • Plain-English ETAs and pricing guidance before any work begins.

What it costs

Pricing depends on the lock, the situation, the time of day, and how far we drive. We confirm the price on the phone before we send a technician.

  • Standalone mailbox locks are inexpensive and quick.
  • Cluster mailbox (CBU) locks cost slightly more — they're more secure hardware.
  • Some USPS cluster boxes can only be re-locked by the postal service itself; the rest we handle directly.
  • Keys are usually included with the new lock.

Frequently asked questions

Can you replace any mailbox lock?

Most standalone and private cluster mailbox locks, yes. For USPS-owned cluster boxes (CBUs), the postal service has to handle the work — they own the hardware and only their carrier holds the master key.

Do you have to come to me or can I bring the mailbox lock to you?

Both work. If you can bring the mailbox door (some apartment cluster mailboxes detach), we can do it at our Forest Ln office. Otherwise we come to you.

Will the new lock work with my building's other mailboxes?

Usually only your specific compartment. Cluster mailboxes are designed so each tenant has their own unique lock and key.

Can you upgrade to a higher-security lock?

For most mailboxes, yes. We carry options that resist picking and bumping much better than the cheap factory locks.

How long does it take?

Most mailbox lock jobs are 15–30 minutes once we're on-site or you've brought the unit in.

Will USPS still deliver to the new lock?

If the lock is on private property, yes — they don't care about the specific lock. If it's a USPS cluster box, the carrier needs a master key that works with the specific approved lock — that's why USPS has rules on what locks can be installed.
